Statistics of China Patent Applications filed by Taiwanese Applicants

Illustrated below by the annual review of the China patent applications filed by Taiwanese applicants, the total number of applications increased 40% from 2000 to 2001; the invention patent applications grew 99.4%, utility model patent and design patent applications grew 28% and 26% respectively. The technological level of the applications increased as well. The percentage of invention patent application increased form 16.8% of 2000 to 24% of 2001. It indicated that the China patent applications filed by Taiwanese industries has shifted from traditional technology to hi-tech applications.

On the other hand, the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) has recently released the number of patent applications in January, 2002, which is decreased 42% in comparison with the average number of monthly application last year (2001). It would be interesting to ponder over whether the difference was result in the changing investing environment or the increase of official fees by the TIPO.
