Taiwan Sets High-tech Goal
As growing number of Taiwan technology companies moved its production base to China, Taiwan’s policy maker are searching for new industrial sections that can provide jobs and stimulate economic growth in Taiwan. The government is encouraging businesses to invest more in advanced technology such as nanotechnology, something Taiwan manufacturers still enjoy an edge over China.
In a meeting with an advisory group of the Executive Yuan (Taiwan’s Cabinet) in early March, the Premier Su asked the group to help to develop 6 industries, with nanotechnology as a top priority. The government would invest more than US$ 615 millions in the nanotechnology between the years 2006 and 2010, and an additional US$ 370 million would be invested in 5 other industries: flexible electronics, radio- frequency identification, robotics, vehicle electronics, and technology for automated homes. Obviously, Taiwan Government’s call to intensify investment in high-tech industries highlights Taiwan’s desire to upgrade its economy amid growing competition with China. |
